Carey-Flintoff Cup & Pink Stumps Luncheon a huge success
The 2023/24 Round 5 Wright Shield match between Ashburton Willows CC and Mulgrave CC was chosen as the occasion for the annual Carey-Flintoff Cup event. We took the opportunity to enhance the already great day with the addition of Pink Stumps Day activities this year centered around a match day Luncheon.
In celebration of two of the clubs greatest ever players - Cam Carey (Ashburton) and David Flintoff (Mulgrave) - the two long-time rival clubs have been contesting an annual match for a piece of silverware named in their honor since 2013/14.
Pink stumps fundraising helps the McGrath Foundation to raise much needed funds for the support of breast care nurses around the country. We were pleased to advise that club sponsor Bendigo Bank (pinewood branch) approached the club to donate $500 in the name of the event to Breast Cancer Research, in addition to the clubs fund raising luncheon and funds donated by individuals directly to the the clubs McGrath Foundation fund raising page (here).
The afternoon was well supported by both Mulgrave and Ashburton members and guests.
Mulgrave president Richard Dwelly said Ashburton Willows was a perfect partner for the annual fixture that not only revives memories of great tussles of the past but allows both clubs to raise much needed funds.
It was fantastic to see so many of Mulgrave's life members in attendance today," Richard said.
“We have a good rivalry with Ashburton that goes back 20-25 years."
“We played in three grand finals against them in a row from 2003 to 2006 and then the semi-final the next season.”
We thank Ashburton CC for their strong support of the event as usual, and thank all the supporters from both clubs that attended on the day to make it another memorable event.
Go Mully!
